Not all artwork is exhibited. So why was I trapped in the mindset for decades that I am not an artist because my creative practice was private?
How emphatic is Rick Rubin on the point that being an artist is a way of existence? About how we live in the world, how we notice, process, and then diffuse that information or experience? It’s taken me decades to change my mind on this and follow-through with my identity and my artwork.
I am putting myself out there again as a follow-up to my NON-ARCHIVAL show in San Francisco and my participation in the Society of Scottish Artists’ 30×30 Online Exhibit in December 2023. Through ArtSpace Innovations my work will appear in Hyde Park Underground Station February 26 – March 10, 2024.
The image that will be published is of Mary Queen of Scots and will be in several points of the tube station (details below for my London-based friends). The piece is a mixed media collage which moved between digital and analog processes and features my own photos, a public domain photo of Mary Queen of Scots, a dressmaker’s pattern, and other mixed media. Historically, Mary Queen of Scots visited Sanquhar very briefly after fleeing from a loss at the Battle of Langside, but she visited the castle, which still stands in ruins today and is commemorated in a plaque on the high street in Sanquhar.
